An Introduction to Emerald Ash Borer
{Also known as EAB}

"Our goal is to establish a more sustainable and comprehensive ash management plan that meets the goals and objectives the city of Hopkins seeks to achieve”
- Wystan, Ryan, Jiaming, Nick, and Katie
Methods
{How we addressed EAB Management}
We explored EAB and it's management primarily through the following methods:
- Interviews with experts in the Field
- Literature/Data analysis
- Possible Partnerships with Hopkins
- Mixed Treatments to Target EAB
Findings
{What we found and its significance}
- Public tree abatement policy is very similar in language and doesn't give insight into management practices and effectiveness
- Interviews over the phone and through email demonstrated that EAB management practices vary widely even between neighboring cities.
- Getting Foresters to respond was a challenge in itself

- Partnerships in EAB provide insight into:
- EAB in general
- The cost of management and/or removal of trees
- Economic benefits of upcycling wood waste
- BMPS
Possible Partners for the City to Explore
The following visualizes theoretical cost ranges for Hopkins
- The EAB cost calculator is a very useful tool that Hopkins can utilize while moving forward with their sustainable plans.
- Urban SLAM proved to be the most effective and cost efficient strategy of the practices compared here:
Slide 1: Annual Cost Comparison of treatments with 1000 Ash tree estimate
Slide 2: Cumulative Cost Comparison of treatments with 1000 Ash tree estimate
Slide 3: Total DBH given Urban Slam vs. other treatment plans for 1000 Ash tree estimate
Slide 4: Annual Cost Comparison of treatments with 8500 Ash tree estimate
Slide 5: Cumulative Cost Comparison of treatments with 8500 Ash tree estimate
Slide 6: Total DBH given Urban Slam vs. other treatment plans for 8500 Ash tree estimate
Slide 2: Cumulative Cost Comparison of treatments with 1000 Ash tree estimate
Slide 3: Total DBH given Urban Slam vs. other treatment plans for 1000 Ash tree estimate
Slide 4: Annual Cost Comparison of treatments with 8500 Ash tree estimate
Slide 5: Cumulative Cost Comparison of treatments with 8500 Ash tree estimate
Slide 6: Total DBH given Urban Slam vs. other treatment plans for 8500 Ash tree estimate
Recommendations
{Our recommendations for the City of Hopkins are derived from our findings and research}
GoldTreatment
- Timely detection and early treatment in the early stages of EAB infestation. Wood Waste - Create long term partnerships with upcycling businesses. Budget - Aggregate where the cost of treatments could be shared with surrounding cities. |
SilverTreatment
- Combined treatment practices for infected trees. Wood Waste - Direct private landowners to local wood waste upcycling organizations. Budget - Treatments limited by budget constraints and tree removal strategies |

(Ziggy1, 2018)
BronzeTreatment
- Insecticide application is the most successful single management practice* Wood Waste - Encourage private landowners to upcycle, rely on standard methods of disposal. Budget - Treatments limited by budget and tree removal strategies |
*Managing EAB with a single management practice is not recommended
